Ken Liu, nato nel 1976 a Lanzhou nella provincia del Gansu in Cina, è uno scrittore americano di narrativa fantasy e di fantascienza.

Dopo aver trascorso l'infanzia con i nonni, all'età di 11 anni si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti dove ha completato gli studi laureandosi nel 1998 all'Harvard College in letteratura inglese e americana.

Ha iniziato a lavorare come ingegnere informatico per Microsoft, per poi entrare in una start-up a Cambridge, nel Massachusetts e, dopo aver conseguito la laurea in giurisprudenza presso la Harvard Law School nel 2004 e aver lavorato come avvocato aziendale, è diventato consulente in controversie high-tech.

Nel 2002 ha compiuto il suo esordio come scrittore con il racconto Carthaginian Rose, un racconto sul trasferimento cerebrale, che è stato pubblicato nell'antologia The Phobos Science Fiction Anthology Volume 1.

Ma è nel 2011 che grazie al racconto The Paper Menagerie si affaccia prepotentemente sulla scena internazionale vincendo nello stesso anno i premi Nebula, Hugo e World Fantasy Awards.

Nel 2013 ha vinto il Premio Hugo con Mono no aware e anche il racconto The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary ha ricevuto una nomination per lo stesso premio.

Dopo una serie di lavori di narrativa breve ha pubblicato The Grace of Kings, il primo romanzo di The Dandelion Dynasty, che è stato finalista al al Nebula Award 2016 e gli è valso il Locus Award come miglior romanzo 2016 di uno scrittore esordiente. Per questa saga di fantasy epico, composta inoltre da The Wall of Storms del 2016, The Veiled Throne del 2021 e Speaking Bones del 2022, l'autore ha coniato il termine "Silkpunk" per descrivere la tecnologia basata su un'elaborazione fantascientifica delle tradizioni dell'ingegneria nell'antichità classica dell'Asia orientale (silk) alla quale ha aggiunto temi di ribellione, resistenza, riappropriazione e ringiovanimento della tradizione e sfida all’autorità (punk). Nel 2017 si è cimentato anche nell'Universo di Star Wars scrivendo il racconto The Sith of Datawork e il romanzo The Legends of Luke Skywalker.

La raccolta di racconti The Hidden Girl and Other Stories, pubblicata nel 2020, esplora idee come tradizione e progresso, la fallibilità della memoria e l'essenza di ciò che significa essere umani e tutto si riallaccia al desiderio di Ken di diventare uno scrittore in modo da poter creare storie che "capovolgano i valori per ottenere nuove prospettive".

In qualità di editore e antologista, Ken ha fatto conoscere ai lettori americani e britannici la science fiction in lingua cinese, traducendo le opere di vari autori tra cui Liu Cixin, Hao Jingfang, Chen Qiufan e Xia Jia. Questo si è rivelato innovativo in quanto è riuscito a contestualizzare la SF cinese contemporanea allontanandosi dalle interpretazioni banali della letteratura che avevano caratterizzato le traduzioni fino a quel momento.

Spesso è presente come oratore in conferenze e presso le università trattando argomenti che includono il futurismo, le criptovalute, la storia della tecnologia, la rilegatura, la matematica degli origami e altri temi di cui è esperto.
