Note biografiche e bibliografia di Pat Cadigan
Patricia Oren Kearney Cadigan, nata a Schenectady nello stato di New York il 10 settembre 1953, è una scrittrice britannico-americana di fantascienza. Cresciuta a Fitchburg nel Massachusetts ha studiato teatro all'Università del Massachusetts Amherst e fantascienza e scrittura di fantascienza all'Università del Kansas sotto la guida dell'autore ed editore James Gunn. Nel 1975 si è unita al comitato della 34ª convention mondiale di fantascienza a Kansas City e durante il weekend del Labor Day del 1976 ha fatto parte del comitato come collegamento con l'ospite d'onore Robert A. Heinlein, che successivamente gli ha dedicato parte del romanzo Friday del 1982, e contribuendo a sviluppare la programmazione della convention. |  |
In quello stesso periodo ha lavorato per lo scrittore fantasy Tom Reamy e nel 1977, alla morte di Reamy, ha iniziato ha lavorare come scrittrice, mentre tra nel periodo 1977-1985, con il secondo marito, Arnie Fenner, ha diretto le riviste di fantasy e fantascienza Chacal e Shayol.
Successivamente si è trasferita a Londra, dove si è sposata con il terzo marito e nel 2014 è diventata cittadina britannica.
Ha iniziato a pubblicare fantascienza nel 1978 con il racconto Death from Exposure apparso sulla rivista Shayol, mentre solo una decina d'anni dopo è stato pubblicato il suo romanzo d'esordio, Mindplayers, che ha ricevuto una nomination al Philip K. Dick Award nel 1988. Con questo lavoro viene introdotto quello che diventerà il tema comune a tutte le sue opere: le sue storie infatti sfumano il confine tra realtà e percezione rendendo la mente umana un luogo reale ed esplorabile.
Il suo secondo romanzo, Synners, vincitore del premio Arthur C. Clarke nel 1992, espande questo concetto presentando un futuro dominato dalle complessità dell'interfaccia uomo/computer in cui è possibile accedere direttamente alla mente attraverso la tecnologia. Come i romanzi cyberpunk di William Gibson e a differenza di quelli di Bruce Sterling, Synners non offre al lettore la sensazione che la tecnologia possa migliorare il mondo in modo significativo, anzi al centro del romanzo c'è la presenza bruciante di un futuro che offre poche possibilità di uscita.
Il terzo romanzo di Cadigan, Fools del 1992, che ha vinto l'Arthur C. Clarke Award nel 1995, ancora una volta tratta il tema della mente umana accedibile dalla tecnologia in un futuro dove i ricordi vengono commercializzati e non si può dare nulla per scontato: nemmeno la propria identità.
Pat ha vinto inoltre tre volte il premio Locus, uno con la raccolta di racconti Patterns: Stories, il Premio Hugo 2013 per il racconto The Girl-Thing Who Went Out for Sushi, il premio Seiun e lo Scribe.
