Garry Douglas Kilworth, nato a York nello Yorkshire il 5 luglio 1941 è uno storico, ex crittografo della Royal Air Force e uno scrittore inglese di vari generi, principalmente fantasy e fantascienza.

Figlio di un aviatore ha vissuto parte della sua infanzia ad Aden, nell'Arabia meridionale e, causa il padre itinerante, ha viaggiato molto in Gran Bretagna e all'estero frequentando più di 20 scuole diverse prima dei 15 anni.

Dopo aver conseguito una laurea al King's College di Londra ha frequentato la scuola militare prestando servizio nella Royal Air Force per 18 anni come crittografo.

Successivamente ha lavorato per una compagnia internazionale di telecomunicazioni, lasciandola per dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla scrittura nel 1981.

Scrittore eclettico, ha scritto romanzi di diversi generi tra cui fantascienza, fantasy, horror, storici, narrativa per bambini, guerra e romanzi letterari e due volumi di poesie, il secondo dei quali con il romanziere Robert Holdstock, con il quale ha condiviso un'amicizia e una collaborazione duratura.

Ha iniziato a pubblicare fantascienza nel 1974 con il racconto Let's Go to Golgotha! apparso sulla rivista Sunday Times Weekly Review.

I suoi lavori di fantascienza e di fantasy non rispecchiano i canoni standard dei generi, ma sono per lo più orientati all'enigmatico e allo strano.

Il suo primo romanzo, In Solitary del 1977, è ambientato su una Terra i cui pochi umani sopravvissuti sono dominati da oltre 400 anni da alieni simili a uccelli, e viene raccontata una ribellione umana il cui impatto morale è ambiguo, viene combinata una generica avventurosità con l'opportunismo e il tutto condito con un'ironia che esprime un dubbio chiaramente inglese sulle radici dell'azione umana.
