Ian Watson, nato a North Shields nel Northumberland il 20 aprile 1943, è un ex professore di futurologia al Politecnico di Birmingham, sceneggiatore e scrittore inglese di fantascienza.

Il suo primo romanzo The Embedding è stato vincitore del Prix Apollo nel 1975: autore molto prolifico e particolarmente brillante nei racconti, in Italia deve parte della sua notorietà alla raccolta The Very Slow Time Machine del 1979, edita in Italia da Urania con il titolo Cronomacchina molto lenta.

Nel 1980, Watson e Michael Bishop scrissero la prima collaborazione transatlantica di romanzi di fantascienza, Under Heaven's Bridge , usando macchine da scrivere e servizi postali.

Recentemente ha scritto una serie di racconti in collaborazione con lo scrittore italiano Roberto Quaglia, The Beloved of My Beloved, presentata nel marzo 2009 alla Eurocon. Il primo di questi racconti, Una tomba per la mia amata, è stato pubblicato in Italia dalla rivista Robot.

Negli ultimi anni ha dedicato parecchio tempo alla serie The Waters of Destiny scritta in collaborazione con Andy West.
