Melissa Scott, nata il 7 agosto 1960 a Little Rock nello stato dell'Arkansas, è un'insegnante e una scrittrice statunitense di genere fantasy e di fantascienza.

Dopo aver studiato storia all'Harvard College e alla Brandeis University, ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in storia comparata con una tesi intitolata The Victory of the Ancients: Tactics, Technology, and the Use of Classical Precedent.

Ha poi iniziato a lavorare come scrittrice e come insegnante di scrittura, offrendo corsi tramite il suo sito web.

Il suo primo romanzo, The Game Beyond pubblicato nel 1984, è una Space Opera che racconta le lotte di potere tra diverse fazioni con i notabili di un Impero, molto simile a quello Romano, che si contendono i posti di prestigio tramando all'ombra dei vari pretendenti.

Successivamente ha pubblicato più di 30 romanzi e vari racconti, la maggior parte scritti con due co-autrici (Jo Graham e Amy Griswold) e la compagna Lisa A. Barnett, e caratterizzati da ambientazioni elaborate e ben costruite, e la trattazione di temi e personaggi di tutti gli orientamenti sessuali e identità di genere non eteroconformi.

Nel 1986 ha vinto il premio John W. Campbell come miglior scrittrice esordiente di fantascienza con il romanzo Five-Twelfths of Heaven, primo volume della serie Silence Leigh e ha vinto i Lambda Literary Awards per i romanzi Trouble and Her Friends, Shadow Man, Point of Dreams e Death By Silver. Sempre con il romanzo Shadow Man ha ricevuto anche una nomination al Tiptree Award oltre a vincere Lo Spectrum Award, premio che ha rivinto successivamente con i romanziDeath By Silver, Fairs' Point e il racconto The Rocky Side of the Sky.
