Hiram Gilmore Bates III, nato il 9 ottobre 1900 a Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania e morto a New York nel settembre 1981, è stato un curatore editoriale e uno scrittore americano di fantascienza. Iniziò a lavorare per William Clayton negli anni '20 come curatore di riviste pulp di avventure e nel gennaio del 1930 creò la rivista Astounding Science Fiction che curò dalla sua nascita fino al marzo 1933, quando Clayton fallì e la rivista fu venduta a Street and Smith: nello stesso periodo, curò altre riviste per Clayton, tra cui Strange Tales, concepita per competere con Weird Tales. Iniziò a scrivere fantascienza con il racconto The Hands of Aten, pubblicato nel 1931.

Nello stesso anno, in collaborazione con il suo assistente editor Desmond Winter Hall e utilizzando lo pseudonimo Anthony Gilmore, dette il via alla serie Hawk Carse composta da cinque racconti che vennero successivamente raccolti nel 1952 in Space Hawk: The Greatest of Interplanetary Adventurers.

Il racconto più famoso di Bates è considerato da molti Farewell to the Master, pubblicato nell'ottobre del 1940 su Astounding, che diventò la base per il film di fantascienza del 1951, The Day the Earth Stood Still, così come per il remake del 2008 e l'adattamento della serie Marvel Comics Worlds Unknown del 1973.

Firmò alcuni dei suoi lavori utilizzando svariati pseudonimi come Anthony Gilmore (assieme a Desmond W. Hall), H.G. Winter, A.R. Holmes e Quien Sabe.

Nel 1953 scrisse la sua ultima storia, The Triggered Dimension, pubblicata nel dicembre del 1953 sulla rivista Science Fiction Plus.
