Note biografiche e bibliografia di Geoffrey A. Landis
Geoffrey Alan Landis, nato a Detroit nello stato del Michigan il 28 maggio 1955, è uno scienziato, autore americano di poesia e di narrativa fantascientifica. Dopo aver vissuto in Virginia, Maryland e in Illinois, si è laureato in fisica e ingegneria elettrica al Massachusetts Institute of Technology, per poi ottenere un Master of Science in fisica, uno in ingegneria, e un dottorato di ricerca in fisica dello stato solido alla Brown University. Lavora come ricercatore NASA al John Glenn Research Center, nei campi dell'esplorazione planetaria, della propulsione interstellare, dello sfruttamento dell'energia solare e, grazie alle sue vaste conoscenze scientifiche, si è cimentato con successo come scrittore di fantascienza hard. |  |
Ha iniziato a pubblicare lavori di narrativa sci-fi con il racconto Elemental, apparso sulla rivista Analog nel dicembre 1984, iniziando rapidamente ad attrarre interesse e attenzione da parte dei lettori.
Nel racconto Vacuum States, pubblicato nel luglio 1988 su Asimov's, lo scrittore ha posto una serie di domande mirate sui rischi della ricerca fisica speculativa e in Ripples in the Dirac Sea apparso sempre lo stesso anno sulla stessa rivista, ha raccontato un'interpretazione coinvolgente e umana del viaggio nel tempo e della matematica, cosa che gli è valso il Premio Nebula nel 1990.
Il racconto A Walk in the Sun del 1991, in cui descrive le conseguenze di uno schianto sulla Luna, ha vinto il Premio Hugo così come Falling onto Mars pubblicato nel numero di luglio/agosto 2002 della rivista Analog. Nel 2010 il raccontoThe Sultan of the Cloudsha vinto lo Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award.
Anche il primo e unico romanzo di Landis, Mars Crossing, pubblicato da Tor Books nel 2000, ha raccolto grande successo vincendo il Premio Locus nonostante, pur mantenendo le basi scientifiche caratteristiche dello scrittore, mostra una trama da thriller fantascientifico.
I lavori di Landis mostrano spesso trame molto realistiche di fantascienza hard sapientemente mixate a dilemmi umani svelando, come nelle sue poesie, un autore affascinato dai dettagli e dalla maestosità dell'universo.
