Note biografiche e bibliografia di Amal El-Mohtar
Amal El-Mohtar, nata a Ottawa nel 1985, è una poetessa, saggista e scrittrice canadese di fantasy e di fantascienza. Nata da una famiglia di origine libanese, è cresciuta a Ottawa ad eccezione di due anni trascorsi in Libano a partire da quando aveva sei anni e ha studiato in Canada e in Inghilterra. Nel periodo 2006-2016 ha co-curato la webzine dedicata alla poesia fantastica Poetry Goblin Fruit: inizialmente con Jessica P. Wick e successivamente con Caitlin Paxson. |  |
Nel 2018 ha iniziato a recensire libri di fantascienza e fantasy per il New York Times Book Review per poi insegnare scrittura creativa presso la Carleton University e l'Università di Ottawa e, nel 2018, è stata anche conduttrice del podcast di scrittura creativa di Brandon Sanderson Writing Excuses per la tredicesima stagione.
Come scrittrice ha iniziato a pubblicare per la prima volta lavori di genere con il racconto The Crow's Caw sulla rivista Shimmer nell'estate 2006.
I racconti The Green Book e Madeleine sono giunti in finale al premio Nebula nel 2011 e nel 2015 rispettivamente, il racconto The Truth About Owls si è aggiudicato il premio Locus nel 2015, il racconto breve Seasons of Glass and Iron ha vinto i premi Hugo, Nebula e Locus nel 2017 mentre il racconto This Is How You Lose the Time War ha vinto l'Aurora, l'Hugo, il Nebula e il Locus Award nel 2019.
Ha pubblicato The Honey Month, volume che raccoglie ventotto variazioni sul tema del miele e include anche una delle sue tre poesie vincitrici del Rhysling Award, mentre in Italia sono stati tradotti The Truth About Owls e Seasons of Glass and Iron apparsi entrambi sui numeri 77 e 82 della rivista Robot edita da Delos Books.
