Michael Joseph Kurland, nato a New York il 1° marzo 1938 è un saggista e uno scrittore americano di genere poliziesco e di fantascienza. Agli inizi della sua carriera di scrittore si è dedicato principalmente alla fantascienza per poi spaziare verso la giallistica. Ha iniziato a pubblicare sci-fi nel settembre 1964 con il racconto Elementary scritto con Laurence M. Janifer e apparso sulla rivista The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, mentre il suo primo romanzo è stato Ten Years to Doomsday scritto con Chester Anderson nel 1964. Di quegli anni sono da citare Tomorrow Knight (scritto sempre con Chester Anderson), Pluribus, Perchance e The Unicorn Girl.

Quest'ultimo è il secondo volume della trilogia Greenwich Village serie composta dai romanzi di tre autori diversi (Kurland, Chester Anderson e TA Waters)..

Kurland ha anche scritto due romanzi, Ten Little Wizards e A Study in Sorcery, ambientati nel mondo di Lord Darcy di Randall Garrett, dove già si incomincia ad intravedere la vena narrativa che lo porterà ad avere successo come autore di gialli.

È anche autore di numerose opere di saggistica, tra cui How to Solve a Murder: the Forensic Handbook e How to Try a Murder: the Handbook for Armchair Lawyers.
