Note biografiche e bibliografia di Nelson Bond
Nelson Slade Bond, nato a Scranton nello stato della Pennsylvania il 23 novembre 1908 e morto a Roanoke il 4 novembre 2006, è stato un filatelista, commerciante di libri rari, uno sceneggiatore e uno scrittore americano di fantascienza. Dopo essersi trasferito con la famiglia a Philadelphia dopo la prima guerra mondiale, frequentò il Marshall College a Huntington, dove contribuì all'Huntington Herald Advertiser e curò il giornale del college, The Parthenon. Una volta conseguita la laurea, lavorò brevemente come addetto alle pubbliche relazioni per la provincia della Nova Scotia prima di iniziare la sua carriera di scrittore nel 1935, prima scrivendo articoli per diversi periodici e poi lavori come autore di narrativa. |

Il suo primo racconto di fantascienza, Down the Dimensions apparve nel numero di aprile del 1937 di Astounding rendendolo di fatto un pioniere nelle prime fasi della storia della fantascienza e del fantasy.
Successivamente pubblicò svariati racconti, la maggior parte dei quali apparvero sulle riviste pulp negli anni trenta e quaranta, scrisse per programmi radiofonici come Dr. Christian , Hot Copy (1943-44) e The Sheriff (1944-51), un seguito di Death Valley Days e sceneggiature per numerosi programmi antologici televisivi, come Lux Video Theatre , Studio One, General Motors Theatre e Tales of Tomorrow.
Il racconto Mr. Mergenthwirker's Lobblies fu adattato per la radio almeno sei volte e fu anche trasmesso come serie radiofonica nel 1938. Una volta scritta anche la sceneggiatura televisiva, divenne la prima opera teatrale completa presentata sulla televisione nazionale e fu trasmessa nel 1946 su Broadway Previews, nel 1949 su The Philco Television Playhouse e nel 1953 su Kraft Television Theatre.
Smise di scrivere alla fine degli anni cinquanta diventando un noto libraio d'antiquariato, pubblicò anche articoli sulla filatelia e fece parte del Board of Governors/Board of Directors della British North America Philatelic Society.
La serie più famosa di Bond fu Lancelot Biggs, un eccentrico viaggiatore spaziale, e apparve tra il 1939 e il 1943 su varie riviste: i racconti rivisitati, vennero poi pubblicati nel 1950, nella raccolta titolo The Remarkable Exploits of Lancelot Biggs, Spaceman.
Notevole successo arrivò inoltre dalla serie di Meg, una giovane sacerdotessa che si ritrova a guidare una tribù dopo l'Olocausto. I racconti, apparsi nel periodo 1939-1942 furono i primi ad introdurre nel mondo della fantascienza un personaggio femminile importante e protagonista.
Le storie di Bond tendevano a spesso combinare elementi di fantascienza e fantasy, mostravano un'elevata cura professionale, e spesso erano caratterizzate da finali a sorpresa.
Nel 1998 lo scrittore ricevette il premio Nebula come Author Emeritus per la carriera.
