Note biografiche e bibliografia di Neon Yang
Neon Yang, nato a Singapore nel 1982, è uno scrittore singaporiano di genere fantasy e di fantascienza. Nato JY Yang, è non-binario e queer: usa il pronome they/them e ha cambiato legalmente il suo nome in Neon nel 2020. E' stato un biologo molecolare, scrittore di animazione, fumetti e giochi, giornalista per uno dei principali giornali di Singapore e un divulgatore scientifico presso l'Agenzia per la scienza, la tecnologia e la ricerca di Singapore (A*STAR). Successivamente ha conseguito un master in scrittura creativa presso l'Università dell'East Anglia ed è stato membro della classe 2013 del Clarion West Writers Workshop. |

Il suo primo racconto di fantascienza, Interview firmato come JY Yang, è apparso nell'antologia The Ayam Curtain del 2012 curata da Joyce Chng e dallo stesso Yang come June Yang.
Successivamente, la sua narrativa breve, è stata pubblicata da riviste del settore come Clarkesworld, Lightspeed Magazine, Uncanny Magazine, Apex Magazine e Strange Horizons.
Il successo è arrivato nel 2017 per la serie di racconti Tensorate pubblicata da Tor.com, che ha visto le novelle finaliste ai Premi Hugo, Locus, Nebula, World Fantasy Award, Lambda Literary Award, British Fantasy Award e Kitschie Award. La prima novella della serie, The Black Tides of Heaven, è stata inoltre nominata da Time Magazine come uno dei 100 migliori racconti fantasy di tutti i tempi.
In realtà The Black Tides of Heaven e le altre novelle della serie vengono denominate come Steampunk, anche se Ken Liu, che ha coniato il termine, le cataloga come Silkpunk: storie in cui elementi di Science Fantasy si sposano e si scontrano con le trasformazioni e le evoluzioni della tecnologia asiatica.
Nel 2018 il racconto Waiting on a Bright Moon è stato tra i primi dieci finalisti del Locus Award 2018 nella categoria migliore novella, Circus Girl, The Hunter, and Mirror Boy è stato finalista al Premio Ignyte 2020, A Stick of Clay, in the Hands of God, Is Infinite Potential è giunto finalista nella top ten del Premio Locus 2021 come miglior novella.
Uguale successo lo ha ottenuto anche il primo romanzo di Neon, The Genesis of Misery: pubblicato nel 2022 da Tor Books, ha ricevuto una recensione stellata da Publishers Weekly, una nomination per il Goodreads Choice Award 2022 per la fantascienza oltre ad essere stato finalista al Locus Award 2023 nella categoria miglior romanzo d'esordio e al Compton Crook Award 2023.
