Note biografiche e bibliografia di Nat Schachner
Nathan Schachner, nato a New York il 16 gennaio 1895 e morto a Hastings-on-Hudson il 2 ottobre 1955, è stato un chimico, avvocato praticante, biografo e uno scrittore americano di genere giallo, horror, fantasy e di fantascienza. Dopo gli studi di chimica, lavorò per il New York Board of Health e, durante la prima guerra mondiale, fece ricerche sulle armi chimiche. Al termine del conflitto s'indirizzò al diritto e diventando avvocato, attività che poi abbandonò per dedicarsi alla scrittura. Fu inoltre uno dei fondatori e dirigenti dell'American Interplanetary Society, azienda pioniera nei missili a combustibile liquido negli Stati Uniti nei primi anni '30. |

In seguito nota come American Rocket Society, l'organizzazione divenne infine parte dell'American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics , una società professionale nel campo dell'ingegneria aerospaziale che oggi conta quasi 30.000 membri in tutto il mondo.
Agli inizi della sua carriera di scrittore scrivendo racconti per le principali riviste pulp specializzate in fantascienza, horror, gialli e avventura firmando alcuni dei suoi lavori con gli pseudonimi Chan Corbett, Walter Glamis e Nathan Schachner.
Negli anni '40 scrisse invece apprezzate biografie dedicate a personaggi storici come Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson e il suo interesse per la storia lo ispirò anche la stesura di romanzi ad essa legati. Ne sono un esempio By the Dim Light del 1941, ambientato a New Orleans dopo la sconfitta del Sud nella guerra di secessione, The King's Passenger del 1942, sulla ribellione di Bacon del 1676 e The Wanderer del 1944, incentrato sulla storia di Dante Alighieri e di Beatrice.
Iniziò a pubblicare fantascienza con il racconto The Tower of Evil scritto assieme ad Arthur Leo Zagat che apparve nell'estate del 1930 sulla rivista Wonder Stories Quarterly, mentre la sua narrativa lunga apparve a puntate sulle principali riviste del settore.
Nel racconto Ancestral Voices 1933, contenente una bizzarra satira sul razzismo, fu il primo scrittore a presentare uno dei più famosi paradossi temporali diventando uno dei pionieri dei primi anni di quella che venne definita l'età d'oro della fantascienza.
Pubblicò un solo romanzo di fantascienza in forma di libro, Space Lawyer del 1941 che assieme ai racconti Old Fireball e Jurisdiction diede origine a una serie umoristica di avventure legali nello spazio.
Scrittore acuto e competente dallo stile spesso rude, nei suoi lavori fantascientifici tentò principalmente di mostrare l'impatto sulle società future di scienza e tecnologie avanzate tanto che Isaac Asimov affermò di essere stato largamente influenzato da Schachner nelle sue storie, ed in particolare nella composizione del famoso Ciclo della Fondazione.
