Note biografiche e bibliografia di Howard V. Hendrix
Howard Vincent Hendrix, nato il 5 marzo 1959 a Cincinnati nello stato dell'Ohio è un accademico e uno scrittore americano di fantascienza. Laureato nel 1980 in biologia all'Università Xavier, ha successivaente conseguito un Master nel 1982 e un dottorato di ricerca nel 1987 in letteratura inglese presso l'Università della California. Professore di inglese alla California State University di Fresno, ha iniziato a pubblicare fantascienza nel 1986 con il racconto In the Smoke apparso nell'antologia Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Vol 2 curata da Algis Budrys. |  |
Ha acquisito notorietà con la serie Lightpaths composta dal romanzo omonimo del 1997, Standing Wave del 1998 e Better Angels del 1999, che cerca di raccontare le possibili implicazioni dell'habitat spaziale come strumento di progresso per la razza umana, sia in termini di politica extraterrestre, sia in termini di plausibilità dell'esplorazione e dell'insediamento spaziale.
Il lavoro considerato migliore dalla critica potrebbe essere Empty Cities of the Full Moon del 2001, che presenta collegamenti con la sequenza Lightpaths in virtù del fatto di essere ambientata in una Storia Alternativa che inizia a divergere dal mondo precedente intorno all'anno 2000, ma a metà circa del ventunesimo secolo, un completo disastro, causato da un progetto di ingegneria biologica, fallito, ha portato il pianeta Terra alla rovina.
La serie Near Future Labyrinth Key che comprende The Labyrinth Key del 2004 e Spears of God del 2006, si concentra invece sull'invenzione di un computer quantistico in una cornice post Guerra Fredda.
Hendrix è stato più volte candidato al premio Science Fiction Writers of America e al Nebula Award nel periodo 1986-1994, ha ricevuto una nomination al Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award nel 1994 per il racconto per At the Shadow of a Dream ed è stato candidato al Pushcart Prize nel 1989 per il racconto The Art of Memory.
