Note biografiche e bibliografia di Steven Utley
Steven Utley, nato a Fort Knox nello stato Kentucky il 10 novembre 1948 e morto il 12 gennaio 2013 a Smirne nel Tennessee, è stato saggista, poeta e uno scrittore americano. Nato nella famiglia di un sottufficiale dell'aeronautica militare e cresciuto nelle basi dell'aeronautica negli Stati Uniti, in Gran Bretagna e a Okinawa, durante gli anni '70, si unì a un gruppo di scrittori di fantascienza ad Austin in Texas, comprendente Lisa Tuttle, Howard Waldrop e Bruce Sterling. Iniziò a pubblicare fantascienza con il racconto The Unkindest Cut of All apparso sulla rivista Perry Rhodan nel dicembre 1972, e il gruppo di scrittori di cui fece parte collaborò in modo prolifico. |  |
Sono infatti di quegli anni Custer's Last Jump, finalista del Premio Nebula nel 1976 e Black as the Pit, From Pole to Pole del 1977, scritti entrambi con Howard Waldrop e considerati i prototipi della fantascienza steampunk.
Utley ebbe notevole notorietà per la serie di racconti Silurian Tales, lanciati sulla rivista Asimov's Science Fiction nel 1993 e successivamente pubbliacti in The Magazine of Fantasy e Science Fiction, Analog Science Fiction e Fact, e nelle webzines Sci Fiction and Revolution Science Fiction.
L'Enciclopedia della Fantascienza lo definisce "una figura di spicco saliente" e Gardner Dozois , che come editore della Fantascienza di Asimov ha pubblicato la maggior parte della produzione di Utley negli anni '90, ha detto di lui che "nonostante potrebbe essere il più sottovalutato autore di fantascienza, fu uno scrittore di forza, duttilità e risorse apparentemente infinite".
Scrisse poesie, saggi umoristici e altri saggi, lavorò anche a fumetti e cartoni animati, e firmò alcune storie di fantascienza con gli pseudonimi Septimus Dale e Bruce Holt.
