John Morressy, nato l'8 dicembre 1930 a Brooklyn nello stato di New York e morto il 20 marzo 2006 a Sullivan nel New Hampshire, è stato un accademico e uno scrittore americano di fantascienza e fantasy.

Dopo aver prestato servizio nell'esercito americano come Marine e lavorato per un certo periodo come corriere a Wall Street, si laureò alla St John's University nel 1953 e nel 1961 ottenne un Master of Arts presso la State University di New York.

Nel periodo 1962-1966 insegnò alla St John's University e dal 1968 al 1991 fu professore di inglese al Franklin Pierce College di Sullivan nello New Hampshire.

Iniziò a scrivere fantascienza nel 1971 con il racconto Accuracy pubblicato da The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, rivista dove successivamente apparvero la maggior parte dei suoi racconti brevi.

Nei primi romanzi, generalmente in stile Space Opera, lo scrittore raccontò di svariate società aliene, la maggior parte delle quali condivideva un background galattico comune: un sistema politico non bene organizzato, ancora dominato dagli umani, in quanto mancante di un governo centrale.

All'interno di questo scenario, le sue trame sono fortemente orientate all'estremità oscura e stravagante dello spettro epico-sf, come nei primi tre volumi della serie Del Whitby che racconta in modo intrigante la stessa storia di macchinazioni e rivoluzioni interstellari da tre punti di vista parziali dato che nessuno dei protagonisti conosce l'intera storia. Nella stessa scena galattica sono ambientati anche A Law for the Stars del 1976 e Frostworld and Dreamfire del 1977, sebbene nessun personaggio sia condiviso e quest'ultimo romanzo è addirittura un'epopea costruita sulla ricerca di un partner riproduttivo da parte di un umanoide metamorfico: egli è l'ultimo della sua razza sul suo pianeta natale, e deve trovare una compagna altrove pena l'estinzione della sua razza.

All'inizio degli anni '80 la narrativa fantascientifica virò sempre più verso il fantasy come verificabile nelle serie Iron Angel e Kedrigern.
