Steven Emory Barnes, nato a Los Angeles nello stato della California il 1° marzo 1952, è uno sceneggiatore e uno scrittore americano di fantasy, gialli e di fantascienza. Laureato in Arti della Comunicazione alla Pepperdine University, è da sempre appassionato praticante di arti marziali (cintura nera di Kenpo Karate e Kodokan Judo, istruttore di Wu Ming Ta, studente avanzato di Jun Fan kickboxing, istruttore di t'ai chi ch'uan, cintura marrone in Shorenji Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do e Aikido) e arti fisiche (istruttore di Hatha Yoga e Ashtanga Yoga). Ha iniziato a pubblicare fantascienza nel 1974 con il racconto breve Moonglow apparso nell'antologia curata da Roger Elwood Werewolves and Other Monsters.

Agli inizi la sua carriera è stata principalmente associata a Larry Niven, collaboratore di Barnes nella maggior parte dei suoi primi lavori, compreso il romanzo d'esordio, Dream Park del 1981.

Deve gran parte del suo successo alla trilogia di Heorot scritta assieme a Niven e Jerry Pournelle e al romanzo The Cestus Deception della serie di Star Wars: Clone Wars che nel 2004 è stato nominato bestseller dal New York Times.

Ha scritto diversi episodi di The Outer Limits e Baywatch e l'episodio A Stitch In Time di The Outer Limits ha vinto un Emmy Award.

Con la moglie, Tananarive Due e l'attore Blair Underwood, ha vinto il NAACP Image Award 2009 per il lavoro di narrativa letteraria In the Night of the Heat: A Tennyson Hardwick Novel.
