Sean Christopher McMullen, nato a Sale il 21 dicembre 1948 è uno scrittore australiano di genere fantasy e di fantascienza.

Laureato nel 1974 in fisica e storia presso l'Università di Melbourne, ha conseguito un diploma post-laurea in biblioteconomia e scienze dell'informazione e un dottorato di ricerca in letteratura medievale. Negli anni '70 è stato un musicista professionista e si è approcciato alla sci-fi cantando in un'opera di fantascienza messa in scena dalla Victorian State Opera.

La sua carriera di autore è decollata quando ha vinto il concorso di scrittura alla World SF Convention del 1985 parallelamente ha lavorato nell'informatica scientifica presso il Bureau of Meteorology.

Nel 2011, il romanzo steampunk Eight Miles si è classificato secondo agli Hugo Awards e ha vinto due volte l'Analog Reader's Award, con Ninety Thousand Horses nel 2013 e Tower of Wings nel 2002.

Il suo primo romanzo è stato promosso da William Gibson e Peter Nicholls e originariamente pubblicato in Australia come due libri separati, Voices in the Light nel 1994 e Mirrorsun Rising nel 1995, mentre il suo primo romanzo pubblicato a livello internazionale è stato The Centurion's Empire del 1998. La storia, che racconta di una macchina del tempo costruita durante l'Impero Romano ha riscosso notevole successo tanto che i suoi primi due romanzi sono stati riscritti e uniti per una pubblicazione negli Stati Uniti come Souls in the Great Machine del 1999, che, a sua volta, è diventato il primo volume della trilogia di Greatwinter.

Pioniere nella pubblicazione elettronica, la sua storia del 2002 su sf.com, Voice of Steel, è stata nominata per il British Science Fiction Association Award e ha vinto il Nova Fantastyka Readers Award.

A causa dei suoi impegni ha deciso nel 2015 di dedicarsi alla fantascienza e al fantasy per i ragazzi scrivendo la serie The Warlock's Child in collaborazione con Paul Collins.
