Alan Peter Ryan, nato nel quartiere del Bronx a New York il 17 maggio 1943 e morto a Rio de Janeiro il 3 giugno 2011, è stato editore, poeta e scrittore americano di fantascienza e di horror. Iniziò a lavorare come recensore di libri per il New York Times per poi diventare scrittore nel momento in cui il suo racconto Sheets del 1979 venne pubblicato nell'Antologia del miglior horror degli anni '80. Quello stesso anno ricevette la nomination al John W. Campbell Award come miglior nuovo scrittore. Incoraggiato poi da Charles L. Grant e dai suoi amici Thomas Monteleone e Jill Bauman, Ryan fece pubblicare il suo primo libro in edizione tascabile Panther! nel 1981.

Ryan fu soprattutto un prolifico autore horror e anche un rispettato editore, con importanti antologie tra cui i candidati al World Fantasy Award: Perpetual Light del 1982 e Night Visions: In the Blood del 1984, prima nella serie Night Visions pubblicata da Berkley e poi Subterranean Press. Queste antologie presentarono opere di autori come Charles L. Grant, Robert Silverberg e Brian Aldiss.
