Robert Mayer, nato nel quartiere del Bronx di New York City il 21 ottobre 1959, è uno scrittore americano di vari generi e di fantascienza. Ha pubblicato romanzi militari con il proprio nome, spesso utilizzando la sua esperienza diretta di ex berretto verde, a ha scritto opere fantascientifiche firmandole con gli pseudonimi Robert Doherty e Greg Donegan. Come Doherty, dopo il romanzo iniziale The Rock del 1996 in cui racconta di un thriller ambientato a Ayers Rock nell'entroterra australiano dopo un viaggio nel tempo, ha pubblicato la serie Area 51 in cui oltre alla tematica sugli UFO viene evocato l'universo degli X-Files, sebbene gli episodi si concentrino specialmente su un'antica astronave ritrovata in Antartide.

La serie Psychic Warrior ha invece uno stile fantascientifico-militare con come protagonista un'unità di soldati dotata di poteri Psi, mentre la serie Atlantis, firmata con lo pseudonimo Donegan è imperniata su una razza aliena responsabile della distruzione di Atlantide che si è insediata sul fondo marino del Triangolo delle Bermuda, da cui minaccia il mondo.
