John Allen Barnes nato ad Angola nello stato dell'Indiana il 28 febbraio 1957 è uno scrittore americano di fantascienza. Barnes ha conseguito la laurea alla Washington University, un master presso l'Università del Montana e un dottorato di ricerca in teatro presso l'Università di Pittsburgh. Ha contribuito al sito web di Internet Evolution oltre ad aver lavorato in analisi dei sistemi, statistica aziendale, teoria dell'affidabilità del software, analisi del sentiment, semiotica statistica. Per circa una decina di anni ha anche insegnato al Western State College in Colorado prima di dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla carriera di scrittore professionista.

Le storie di Barnes, che traggono ispirazione dalle opere di Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson e Keith Laumer, spesso esplorano questioni di responsabilità morale individuale all'interno di un contesto sociale più ampio. La critica sociale è intessuta in tutte le sue trame e ne sono un esempio i quattro romanzi della sua serie Thousand Cultures che pongono seri interrogativi sugli effetti della globalizzazione sulle società isolate.

Ma la fantascienza dello scrittore è in continua evoluzione: nella serie Daybreak il ciclo, che inizia con Directive 51 del 2010, abbandona i canoni più classici per virare verso un Techno thriller del prossimo futuro con protagonista un gruppo di terroristi che minacciano di abbattere la civiltà umana.
