Martha Wells, nata a Fort Worth nel Texas il 1° settembre 1964, è una scrittrice americana di letteratura fantasy e di fantascienza.

Ha conseguito un Bachelor of Arts in antropologia alla Texas University e sin dai tempi del college è stata coinvolta nel fandom dei suoi generi preferiti.

La sua carriera di scrittrice è iniziata partecipando a diversi workshop locali di scrittura e a convention come il Turkey City Writer's Workshop tenuto dallo scrittore Bruce Sterling.

Il suo primo romanzo, The Element of Fire del 1993, è stato finalista al Compton Crook Award del 1993 e candidato al premio William Crawford Award del 1994 mentre il suo terzo romanzo, The Death of the Necromancer del 1998 ha ricevuto una nomination al premio Nebula.

Ha scritto anche romanzi ambientati nel mondo Stargate Atlantis, Reliquary e Entanglement e il racconto breve Archaeology 101 ambientato in Stargate SG-1: ha partecipato anche all'universo di Star Wars con Empire and Rebellion: Razor's Edge.

In questi ultimi anni si sta dedicando al ciclo The Murderbot Diaries dove narra di un cyborg progettato come unità di sicurezza per una spedizione scientifica, che riesce a sovrascrivere la sua unità di governo, consentendole così di sviluppare l'indipendenza e di acquisire sentimenti umani.

Martha incontra il gusto dei lettori soprattutto per le società complesse e realisticamente dettagliate che crea nei suoi libri riversando in essi parte del background accademico in antropologia che possiede.
