Michael Francis Flynn, nato a Easton in Pennsylvania nel 1947, è uno scrittore americano di fantascienza. Dopo la laurea in matematica coneguita presso l'Università La Salle e un Master in topologia alla Marquette University, prima di dedicarsi alla scrittura ha lavorato come ingegnere e statistico di qualità industriale. Ha iniziato a scrivere racconti brevi nel 1984, diventando rapidamente uno dei protagonisti della rivista Analog firmando i suoi racconti con diversi pseudonimi: Michael Flynn, Mike Flynn, Michael Francis Flynn e Rowland Shew. Da allora ha pubblicato diversi romanzi tra cui Firestar del 1996) ed Eifelheim del 2006, finalista dell'Hugo Award nello stesso anno di plubblicazione. Nel 2003 ha vinto il Robert A. Heinlein Award.

Quasi tutte le opere di Flynn rientrano nel genere della fantascienza hard, anche se trattata in modo inusuale, dal momento che vi ha applicato tematiche di sociologia come nel caso del romanzo In the Country of the Blind.
