Michael Lawson Bishop, nato a Lincoln nel Nebraska il 12 novembre 1945 e morto a Pine Mountain, Georgia il 13 novembre 2023, è stato uno scrittore americano di fantascienza che in oltre 40 anni e più di 30 libri, ha realizzato quello che è stato definito un "corpus di opere" tra le più ammirate e influenti della science fiction e del fantasy moderni.

Laureatosi alla Georgia University iniziò a pubblicare racconti nel 1970 e alcuni di questi fecero parte della raccolta Catacomb Years del 1979.

Una delle sue prime opere di rilievo è Eyes of Fire, scritta nel 1975 e pubblicata come A Funeral for the Eyes of Fire, ma revisionata nel 1980. Accanto alla suggestioni della cosiddetta fantascienza hard, il romanzo apre un attento esame intorno al problema dei pregiudizi razziali e delle persecuzioni religiose.

Grande estimatore di Philip K. Dick gli ha dedicato nel 1988 il romanzo Philip K. Dick Is Dead pubblicato da Alas. Con Ian Watson scrisse Under Heaven's Bridge nel 1981, in Count Geiger's Blues del 1992 narrò le gesta di un supereroe in una America parallela, perdendo il filone science-fiction di molti lavori precedenti e, in anni più recenti, ha scritto storie brevi accostandosi anche alla detective fiction. Questo lo ha portato ha perdere di popolarità, anche se la sua opera è centrale all'interno della fantascienza contemporanea e può vantare vertici di alta qualità narrativa.

Bishop è stato premiato due volte con il premio Nebula : nel 1981 per The Quickening e nel 1982 per No Enemy But Time, entrambi come miglior romanzo. Ha anche vinto quattro Locus Awards e i suoi romanzi hanno ricevuto la nomination per numerosi Hugo Awards. Nel luglio 2009, The Pile ha ricevuto lo Shirley Jackson Award per il miglior racconto del 2008.
